Revenge is a common theme in entertainment because our fallen nature wants to avenge itself when wronged.
However, Jesus challenges us to be different. Instead of an “eye for an eye”, Jesus exhorts us to not only love one another, but to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us! Jesus wants us, His disciples, to be radically different from the people in the world! Jesus doesn’t just call us to not be evil towards others, He wants us to pursue what’s good for one another (fellow Christians) and for all (the world at large). Unless we let the Holy Spirit lead us and permeate every aspect of who we are, we cannot be the kind of person Jesus wants us to be.
