Before we came to know Jesus as Saviour and Lord through His Spirit, we were sinners who had no desire within ourselves to do what is right. There was nothing in us that desired God or a relationship with Jesus. Simply put, we lived for our flesh and would do anything to satisfy our own desires.
When the Holy Spirit did His saving work in us, and helped us to confess Jesus with our mouths and believe in Him in our hearts, that is when the desire to do good that glorifies God was birthed in us. However, being that we live in a sinful world, the old man within us still wants to satisfy itself. The Spirit is willing but our flesh is weak. Often we win thanks to the Spirit but sometimes we lose to the flesh. Praise the LORD that He doesn’t condemn us when we lose because of Jesus!
